There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think to myself, I can do better. It might be how I wake up, what I do in the morning, how I treat myself, what I do at work and how much love I give to those that are closest to me. The big one that’s consuming my thoughts and is constantly humming in the background is how do I live better? I mean how do I do better for the planet everyday. How do I reduce my consumption? How do I become a better role model for my kids and live a more sustainable life?
Really, holy shit! That is a lot of doing better, right? But honestly, it’s haunting me.
I’m 42. I had a great life growing up, things were easy, I mean really easy. We weren’t poor, but we weren’t rich, I learnt to cook at an early age, be independent, I could walk to school, I got a job when I was early blah blah blah……. That’s right, in my day…….. Oh god you know it. My mum said it to me, her parents said it to her, and so on and so on. However I am now saying it to my kids, and not to mention my millennial colleagues “In my day”, “when I was young”, and again blah blah blah. But really living was different. I am not saying better, just different. I’d say it’s about human consumption that’s got me thinking and probably over thinking this thought “how can I do better?”.
We were pretty free growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. We walked everywhere, stayed out playing on the streets until dark, or until mum screamed for us to come in, and we had just enough. I saved up for a stereo (which I still have, tape deck, press record and play style) and a car and had about 3 different outfits that were used over and over, and over. I was a prime age when the millennium hit, but I never over consumed, or at least I didn’t think I did. Now as this reflective and semi grown up adult I see the consumption and I raise it, no I don’t I am trying to resist it. I want to find ways of enjoying the things I love, like modern furniture, fashion and food. I am on an exploration, a quest to blend both the modern consumptions and living sustainably, more sustainably.
Things don’t change without changing myself, that is where I am at right now.
So, here I am beginning to make these changes, in my own backyard and I invite you to share this with me. I plan to journey through all the things that inspire me, the arts and the things I love, like the fashion, food and furniture. I will share the ways I have found to up cycle, recycle, reinvent, reuse all with a tinkerers mind and a mission to be better at it.
Stay tuned for my next blog……………
